Given how YOI started with Yuuri’s failure at the Grand Prix Final, it was almost too easy to discount the fact that Yuuri’s a professional skater - the top skater in Japan actually.
But there are all these clues in the background, even throughout the first episode, that Yuuri is an unreliable narrator when it comes to assessment of his own skills.
Just look at all the trophies that his family has proudly displayed in the common dining area!!!
In fact, he has so many, that there are evenmore trophies in storage in his room!
The series uses anchoring to introduce Yuuri as a subpar skater, to set the stage for the narrative of him getting stronger. But Yuuri has always been a damn fine skater and he has the trophies to prove it.
Guess what else I found:
…..
HE HAS AN ENTIRE TROPHY CASE IN ICE CASTLE.
Because clearly there is no more space in the entire freaking inn. Or the Nishigori family is so damn proud of Yuuri that they want to show everyone how freaking awesome he is.
And it’s prominently displayed right next to the entrance so it’s the first and last thing everyone sees in Ice Castle.
Nothing gets my blood boiling faster than people saying he’s a bad skater/worse than the other characters.
Y’all saw those programs? Eros would kill a man dead on his tracks and he’s managed to pull it off flawlessly twice as of episode 8. And even before Viktor, he made it to the GPF while binge-eating out of stress and just after his dog died.
Being the top skater in Japan is nothing to be scoffed at. Yuri Katsuki may have (had) the self-confidence of a dormouse but he’s made of steel.
EDIT: yet another post I thought I had reblogged but didn’t. This is starting to become a pattern…
