Okay, I apologize for the slightly long post, but it has come to my attention on twitter and here that a new movie could possibly be a rip off of the show Yuri on Ice. While I understand the uproar, a lot of people hope the movie will flop. I thought it would be useful to provide the facts through screenshots. I could use some help finding better sources. The top 3 screenshots show the plots for Yuri on Ice and the movie Love on Ice. I thought it would help for everyone to read the correlation between the two programs and their plots.
Unsurprisingly, the 4th screenshot shows that the movie will be airing on TV, NOT the movies. And that specific TV channel is the Hallmark Channel. I took the liberty of showing you all the About Us page on screenshot 5 so anyone unfamiliar can get a brief glimpse of what Hallmark Channel is about.
Screenshots 6 and 7 are my visual illustrations of just how well-known and popular the Hallmark Channel is. It’s been around for quite sometime and it seems to have a target audience.
Screenshot 8 is a google image search of Hallmark Movies. You can see that the majority of their movies feature a predominantly Caucasian cast. The leading couples in all of their movies are heterosexual. This gives a good picture of the usual target audience.
From personal experience, the people who enjoy this channel are older straight white women. Upon trying to google the target demographic I could not find any clear results. But you can all see that it would be very trying to try to get such a different demographic of people to care that the Love on Ice movie is a rip off of a Japanese animated series.
Screenshot 9 is the Hallmark Channel twitter page. My advice? We need to keep creating posts and sharing them. We need to make this well-known on different platforms of social media. Tumblr, Twitter, Facebook, you name it. It would be advisable for Twitter to have a hashtag so it can trend such as #stopplagiarizingyurionice You don’t have to use that hashtag, it’s merely a suggestion. Not everyone uses Tumblr so it really needs to get out there. If the professional skaters who love this show found out, perhaps that can be helpful. I don’t mean you guys go and flood them all at once.
I think Kubo sensei deserves to at least be aware of this since it is possible copyright infringement. I can’t guarantee how successful this will be as we’re talking about media from two different countries of origin. But if you’re interested in doing something, it’s well worth a shot. It’s also extremely hard to find credible sources on certain topics outside of Wikipedia pages.
Thank you for reading and I apologize for the long post. Likes are helpful but reblogs are more powerful.
